The end of 2016 is coming near, and so is this month of November. Yes, this word count is going towards NaNoWriMo’s 50,000 goal.

When 2017 begins in 35 days and counting, I will have already tested out my resolutions. This idea came to me about two years ago, when I was struggling with keeping my resolutions like losing weight and spending more time with my Trombone.

new-year-2017

The problem? Well, if the goals were written in the previous year, shouldn’t they begin in that year? The logical part of my  brain loved this idea, and so for the past year, that is exactly what I do. Also recall these famous lines: “it takes twenty-one days to break a bad habit.”

The best example I have of this theory I use, is with Fitness. Instead of waiting till January 1st to begin your new workout, why not in December? By the time January rolls around, you will know when to work out, what workout tunes to use, and you’ll be saving a lot of time by already knowing “what” workouts to pursue in the New Year.

In the month of November, I brainstorm what has gone well for the current year, and then in December I test out plans on to improve these plans. Sounds odd, but when January 1st rolls around, it helps me NOT PANIC that its a new year, and that the goals I for sure want to accomplish, were tested the year before.

new-year-2

Do I currently recall my 2016 resolutions? Not really. I have this calendar, and on the first blank page was the written goals I had for the year. I only listed a small amount, because some of these goals were written to work throughout parts of the year, like seasons. Note: I found this planner, which is shrinking because  I tear out pages once the week is done. I had nine goals.

Here are some goals I set for myself in 2015, and was able to accomplish in 2016:

1. NaNoWriMo 2016 while this is going on currently, I am on the track to finishing on November 30th. That’s if (and I WILL) pump out 6,000 words between now and the last day. #ProcrastinationIsMotivation

2. WrestleMania 32 My Mother bought me tickets to the show of shows in Wrestling as a Christmas gift in 2015. While this was in Dallas, Texas I wanted to make the most of it, so I went and treated my family to WM 32 Hall of Fame, Axxess, and much more. We had a blast that weekend, and you can read the from that trip here.. Yes, I am going to Orlando for WrestleMania 33! 😀

3. Spirituality I had reluctantly added this to my 2016 list this year, but it became the focal point of my year, along with Creativity. This year has taught me so much about learning how to trust not only self, but higher beings that have shaped or molded you. Half-way through the year, I started a blog series called “Spirituality Series” and I truly plan on resuming that series in January.

I also like to go on Spiritual “hiatus” between October-November, and June-August. It’s something that just happens, so maybe I can retrace those reasons and ideas as to why.

4. Blogging I have written more articles, poems, and the like then when I started my blog here in 2014. I also launched a podcast and sports website for myself, which is over at Square Space. I haven’t done any audio work yet, but I wrote this short article about the Chicago Cubs. I am proud of the blogs I have written, the readers who patiently read through things like this, and the blogs I follow in return.

In December, I will actually do a re-cap of “2016” as a separate blog, and I’ll probably have a rough idea of what 2017 goals I will have being tested. I know that some of the goals that haven’t worked over the past two years, I will try again. For example, this year I had signed up for the Oklahoma City 5K, but due to health, I was not able to go run. I gave my spot to someone else, and cheered from out of state.

This next month will be filled with trial and error, as well as the Holiday season. What are some goals you have in mind for 2017?

Holiday Cheers,
